gospel of prayer. Luke alone showed a marked interest in the private prayer
life of Jesus. In the book of Luke, one would discover three different parables
on prayer, for example, the parables of the “friend at midnight”, “the Pharasee
and the Publican” and “the unrighteous judge”. Also when his disciples asked
Jesus to teach them how to pray, it was after Jesus himself had finished
praying. Again, at cardinal points in his life and ministry, Jesus prayed.
Jesus prayed at his baptism and during his transfiguration, for example. Luke was
interested in prayer; that is why his book is called a book of prayer.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><b><i>Interest in women</i></b></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Another feature of the book is that it is interested in women.
Luke gives a lot of space for women and women’s issues in his gospel. Luke
wrote about the Prophetess Anna, who, it was said was not going to die until
she had seen the savior with her eyes. Luke vividly captured her feelings and
reactions when she saw the Christ. Luke also recorded the story of the widow at
Nain. This makes Luke’s gospel a gospel of women.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><i><b>Gospel of the Holy Spirit</b></i></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">The other characteristic with which the book of Luke is
associated is the fact that it is a gospel of the Holy Spirit. In Luke’s
account of the birth of Jesus, the Holy Spirit features highly. Also, in the account
of the baptism of Jesus, the Holy Spirit was described as having descended in a
bodily form like a dove. Jesus himself is recorded to have said that “the
spirit of God is upon me”. This goes to prove that Luke’s gospel is gospel of
the Holy Spirit. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><i><b>A gospel of praise</b></i></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">The book of Luke is also described as a book of praise and
joy. In the early parts of his book, especially, Luke recorded the “Benedictus”,
the “Ave Maria” and the “Magnificat”. These were songs that were offered in
praise of God and done with joy in the hearts of the people who offered them.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><i><b>Universalism</b></i></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Luke’s gospel is also tainted with a global outlook. It
sought to appeal to the world rather than to the Hebrews exclusively. For
example, Luke traced the family tree of Jesus to Adam, who is seen as the
father of the human race and not to Abraham, who is considered as the father of
the Jews, as Matthew did. Another example of universalism is the fact that when
the child Jesus’ life was in danger, God appeared to Joseph and told him to
flee to Egypt, a gentile nation. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Luke had a lot of interest in individuals. He showed a lot of
interest in the personal lives of people. It is one reason his book is called a
gospel of people. He wrote about the personal experience of the woman called
Elizabeth, the wife of Zachariah and how she had a baby in her old age. He
wrote about Zacchaeus and the relationship between Martha and Jesus. That is
why it is called the gospel of people.</span></div>

OF WRITING THE GOSPEL OF MARK</span></b></div>

<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">One of the main reasons why Mark wrote his book was to
present Jesus as the true son of God. In the opening verses of Mark’s gospel,
he wrote the following; “The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son
of God.” In other words Mark was trying to establish Jesus Christ's sonship from the very
beginning. At the end of his gospel, Mark again confirmed the Sonship
of Jesus when the Centurion said, “Truly, this man was the Son of God.”</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Another reason Mark wrote his book was to show that before
the mystery surrounding the Messiahship of Jesus can be truly understood, he
must have died on the cross. In order to achieve this, Mark gave accounts of
people who were not able to perceive the true person of Jesus. For example, in “his
own country”, among his people, it did not dawn on them that he was the Messiah;
therefore they took offence when he preached to them in the synagogue. They saw
him as an ordinary person, the Carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of
James, Joses, Judas, and Simon. In the estimation of these people, Jesus could
not have been speaking with such authority.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Not even Jesus’ own disciples could perceive who he really
was even after being with them for a period of time. Jesus asked his disciples “Who
do men say that I am?”. Some of the disciples said he was John the Baptist, others said he was Elijah
and yet others also said, he was one of the prophets. Mark’s aim was that the Messiahship of Jesus should be realized only after his death and resurrection.</span></div>

as hiding his messianic identity. He did not want people to know that he was the
Messiah until he had gone through his suffering and death on the cross. For
example, in Capernaum, a man with an unclean spirit proclaimed the Messiahship
of Jesus but he silenced him by saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” </span></div>

good-news in the New Testament. The New Testament fulfillment of the Old
Testament prophesy started with the work of John the Baptist and was taken over
by Jesus Christ. After the death of Jesus, his disciples took over the mantle.
Then after the disciples phased out, the church to take over and spread the good-news to the rest of the world.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">One of the external evidence about the authorship of Luke is
called Eusebius. He wrote in A.D. 325 that “Luke, by race a native of Antioch,
and by profession a physician…has left us examples,…in two inspired books, the gospel
and the Acts of the Apostles.” This is a historian confirming through his
writings that Luke wrote the gospel of St. Luke.</span></div>

seen in the Muratorian fragmant. This document is regarded as ”…a copy of perhaps
the oldest known list of most of the books of the New Testament.” Luke’s gospel
and the Acts of the Apostles are all confirmed to have been written by Luke the
physician.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">In the book of Colossians 4:14, Paul also described Luke as “the
beloved physician.” Though this statement does not clearly say that he wrote
the book of Luke, it confirms that he was a medical doctor and therefore confirms
what Eusebius had also written. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Note: the thrust of the internal proof that Luke wrote the
gospel is largely premised on proving that he was a physician because the
writer and his profession have not been detached.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">It is argued that since Luke was a medical doctor, some medical
terms have found their way into his writings that go to prove that he wrote the
book of Luke. In the story of the healing of Peter’s mother-in-law, Luke identified
that the woman was down with “High Fever.” It was his training as a Medical Doctor
that helped him to diagnose the ailment and to state it in his book.</span></div>

be unsavory. In the story of the healing of the woman with the issue of blood,
Mark wrote that the woman had been to a lot of physicians and had paid money
but the physicians could not cure him. Luke toned down this statement, writing
that “She could not be treated by anyone.” It is assumed that since Luke was a
medical practitioner, he could not allow that statement about doctors to be
written in his book, hence, he removed it. This is exactly what betrays him as
a doctor. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">The authorship of book of Acts of the Apostles adds credence
to the belief that Luke wrote the gospel of Luke. In the opening verses of the
Acts of the Apostles, the author referred to a first book that he had written.
This first book is believed to be Luke. The reason is that the book of Acts
seems like the sequel to the book of St. Luke. While the book of Luke followed
the work of Jesus from Galillee to Jerusalem, the Acts of the Apostles traced
the beginning of Christianity from Jerusalem to the Apian ways of Rome. It is
this continuity that exposes Luke as the author of both books. </span></div>

how the Christian movement started with the work of John the Baptist in the
Jordan region, where he proclaimed forgiveness and repentance, to how
Christianity was proclaimed in the streets of Rome. In other words, the
movement of what Jesus continued after John’s announcement to its declaration
in the alleys of Rome.</span></div>

explanation of the Christian movement. The gentiles may have been finding it
difficult to comprehend the new concept and this may have influenced their
acceptance or otherwise of the religion. Luke’s purpose was, therefore, to give
a documented explanation of the oral rendition that had been in circulation at
the time in addition to some written ones that he could lay his hands on.</span></div>

had happened among them as was seen by eyewitnesses and as told by ministers. By
this time, the gospel was in circulation both in written and mostly in oral
forms. His intention was therefore, to give the stories some concrete order so
that “… most excellent Theophilus may know the truth.”</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">The Christian religion was then new, there were therefore doubts how genuine it was. Apart from that, the terrain in which it was circulating was
also difficult. Luke’s aim was to write the account that could clear any doubts
about the new religion and reduce the difficulties associated with
understanding that was being experienced at the time.</span></div>

the Son of God. It was also to show to everybody that he had come to redeem the
