How to prevent irresponsible adolescent bahaviour
Over-protection
Parents must not be overprotective of their
adolescent children. The child must be given some freewill to act on his/her
own while the parents still guides and directs them.
Good Parental control
and care
Parents must create, in their homes, a conducive
atmosphere so that the adolescent can feel at ease. Parental control at home
must not be authoritarian. Under certain circumstance, rules at home must be
relaxed.
Provision of basic
needs
Parents must ensure that they provide the basic
needs of their children and for the adolescent children especially. This would
prevent or control the way they find other ways of getting those things that
the parents are supposed to provide for them.
Moral education
Parents must instill in their children good moral
education, the type of moral discipline that they will not grow to depart from.
Good moral education helps to develop good moral habits in the adolescents.
This way, they become law abiding, respect authority and help them to resist
the urge to indulge in vices.
Adolescent
information
The adolescent children must be given vital
information, both at home and in school. Such information can equip them and
help to recognize the dangers associated with irresponsible behavior when they
see one. Knowing the consequences of their irresponsible behavior also helps
them to avoid them.
Guidance and
counseling
Adolescent children must be given guidance and
counseling both by their parents and if possible by professionals. This can
help prevent adolescents’ irresponsible behaviour. It is capable of channeling
them away from acts like teenage sex, drug abuse, armed robbery, prostitution,
drunkenness etc.
